Robinson Crusoe!
Description
A little wooden house, a wonderfully green plot and views that stretch far beyond your own garden. Here in Altenberg, near Greifenstein, a summer retreat awaits those who enjoy getting away from it all – and don't mind a few uphill steps to get there.
The approximately 35 m² cottage sits on an 871 m² freehold plot and is designated as a building worthy of preservation in a green zone. Any potential extension would need to be clarified separately with the relevant building authority.
The approach already hints at how peaceful it is up here. A narrow, steep cul-de-sac winds its way up the hillside, with the fenced property located close to the top. Through traffic? There is simply no reason for anyone to come this way.
Inside the garden fence, greenery takes over. The plot stretches narrowly up the hillside, lush with vegetation and currently offering a generous dose of jungle atmosphere. If you enjoy clearing paths, discovering favourite spots and giving a garden your own personal touch, there is plenty to do here. The reward awaits further up: beautiful views across the valley, towards the Danube and all the way to the Weinviertel region.
You can certainly indulge in a little Robinson Crusoe fantasy here: your own little kingdom surrounded by greenery, with rustling leaves all around and something new to discover every day. The only difference is that you won't have to wait for Friday – simply bring your favourite people along.
Newly built in 2009 using timber-frame construction, the summer cottage makes it easy to feel at home straight away. Plenty of light-coloured wood, exposed beams and a living and sleeping area open right up to the roof ridge create an exceptionally cosy atmosphere. Thanks to the open ceiling height, the room feels surprisingly spacious, with room for shared meals, relaxing and overnight stays. And when you open your eyes in the morning, the greenery is already peeking in through the window. The dining table is also a lovely place to sit when summer takes a little break.
The entrance leads into a small hallway, with a fully equipped kitchen directly adjoining it. The spacious living and sleeping area is on the left, while the bathroom with shower and WC is on the right. A storage room provides additional space, and a utility room is located beneath the house.
Outside, terraces offer inviting spots surrounded by greenery. Bring a book, set down your coffee and take a moment to see what is moving among the leaves. The property borders directly on the “Wienerwald–Thermenregion” European protected area, which is also a bird sanctuary. Here, woodland and nature are simply part of everyday life.
Water and electricity are available, and heating is electric. The sewer connection is already in front of the house, although the connection to the building itself still needs to be installed. Until then, a functioning cesspit is available.
And although it all feels wonderfully far removed from the pace of city life, everyday amenities are still close by. The neighbouring town of St. Andrä-Wördern offers everything you need for daily life. Tulln city centre and, in the opposite direction, Klosterneuburg can each be reached in around 20 minutes by car. The railway connection via Greifenstein-Altenberg station also makes this location an attractive option for short escapes from Vienna.
There is also plenty of opportunity to enjoy a swim. The nearby Greifenstein Old Danube, a popular local recreation area for Vienna residents, invites you to take a dip and spend relaxing hours by the water in summer. First, a refreshing swim, then back uphill to your own green retreat – that is what a summer's day here could look like.
A summer retreat for those who would rather gaze at greenery than watch the calendar – and who are already wondering, on the way home, when they can return.
