Some places inherently carry a certain magic within them. This small garden house in Höflein on the Danube undoubtedly belongs to that category. Nestled between the tranquil Silver Lake and the mighty river, every window seems like a picture frame: no matter where you look – there is always water.
The location is unique: quiet, almost secluded, yet directly located on the Danube Cycle Path. Few neighbors, plenty of nature, and a piece of freedom that is hard to find today.
That it is owned land makes this even more special – a true rarity in the small garden area. The house itself stands on solid stilts – not as an architectural gimmick, but because the Danube sometimes comes closer than one might think. Yet instead of being a burden, it is part of the unique character: those who live here are in harmony with nature and its whims, counting among the chosen few privileged to enjoy such a lifestyle.
The little house was built in the 1940s – but you wouldn’t guess its age at all. On the contrary: it appears fresh and well-maintained, not least because the attic was converted only in 1996. Overall, there are about 35 m² available in the living area, plus an estimated 20 m² in the attic. Unfortunately, there are no plans available, so the area measurements are based on estimates.
Inside, you are welcomed by a warm, rustic atmosphere. Lots of wood, cozy but not overloaded – more like a small alpine hut that has wandered down to the Danube arm.
From the living room, a terrace opens up with a view of the river, particularly enchanting when illuminated boats pass by in the evening.
The small, separate kitchen faces the other direction – towards Silver Lake, where the water lies still and dictates the rhythm of the day. A later extension houses the bathroom with shower and toilet.
The spiral staircase winds its way up to the attic, where the slants seem to lean in so kindly, as if they want to throw a blanket over a wide. A space that exudes coziness by itself – open enough to breathe freely and secure enough to simply leave the world outside.
Below the house hides a built-up pillar floor – practical for everything the garden requires. Speaking of the garden: it is generous and sunny, with a small gate leading directly towards Silver Lake. Only – the path there is currently guarded by a blackberry hedge that has laid itself like a wild wall at the shore. Of course, one can conquer it – or one can take it with a wink as part of this untamed idyll.
While the house is not flawless, it has all the more charm – and that’s what it’s all about here.
And because this house is not just a summer child, it’s worth thinking about winter as well. Then it becomes almost even more atmospheric: when the Danube lets fog rise outside and Silver Lake lies enchanted, you sit inside with a cup of tea or a glass of red wine and feel as if the world has pressed pause for a moment. The wooden paneling crackles softly, the slanted ceilings make it even cozier – and suddenly you understand why many people have felt at home here all year round for many years.
